Transport for NSW Chief Customer Officer Roger Weeks said planning breaks is just as important as mapping out your route and can help fight fatigue on longer journeys.
“The customisable filters on our NSW Rest Area Map can help drivers make informed decisions before they hit the road,” Mr Weeks said.
“The filters include things such as whether a rest stop has a playground so the kids can have some fun while stretching their legs, a BBQ area to cook up a feed and break up a long trip, and which accessibility facilities are available.
“We’re also expecting rain in parts of the state over the next few days so we encourage motorists to use the shelter filter when planning their rest breaks.
"The interactive map not only features around 500 Transport-managed rest areas, but also a range of local council rest areas and highway service centres.
“Research shows that driving while fatigued can be as dangerous as drink driving, so we’re asking everyone to stop, revive and survive these holidays. Rest areas offer a safe space to pull over, swap drivers or take a nap.”
Tragically, so far this year up to midnight on 4 July, 177 people have died on New South Wales roads, which is 15 more than the same time last year.
With the snow season in full swing Mr Weeks said an increase in traffic is expected during the holiday period.
“Alpine Roads will be busy with crowds flocking to the slopes to make the most of the good skiing and boarding conditions,” Mr Weeks said.
“Everyone should take extra care on alpine roads, especially where ice and snow may be present. Slow down, avoid heavy braking, give extra space for the vehicle in front and carry and fit snow chains when signage indicates or when directed to at chain bays.”
Sydney Airport is also expected to be busy this holiday period, with many people travelling to warmer climates overseas or interstate. If you are catching a flight allow extra travel time or consider catching public transport.
Road connections around the airport precinct may have changed since your last visit due to the Sydney Gateway project.
