The latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reveals that nearly 6.7% of employed Australians now hold multiple jobs, a significant increase from 5.1% in June 2020.
Among these enterprising individuals are Bob and Crissy Tortasi, a couple from Campbelltown who have found a unique way to balance their financial needs and family life.
Since 2023, Campbelltown couiple Bob and Crissy have been working together as DoorDash delivery partners, navigating the streets of South-Western Sydney, including Liverpool and Fairfield.
This side hustle has become an essential part of their routine, helping them manage their expenses and provide a better life for their five children, with a sixth on the way.
Crissy, 35, works full-time as a registered nurse, a demanding job that requires her to follow a set roster every two weeks. Despite her busy schedule, she finds joy in joining Bob, 39, on their delivery runs.
“I love helping Bob to ‘dash around’,” Crissy shares. “It allows us to enjoy each other’s company outside of our usual routines.”
For Bob, DoorDash is more than just a side gig; it’s his primary source of income. The flexibility of the job allows him to coordinate with Crissy’s nursing shifts, ensuring they can spend quality time together and with their children.
“We chose DoorDash because it lets us work flexibly at times that suit us,” Bob said. “We can set weekly or monthly goals based on our budget, and even if we don’t always reach them, we can track our progress and adjust our efforts accordingly.”
The benefits of their side hustle extend beyond financial stability. Dashing together has strengthened their bond as a couple and allowed them to be more present in their children’s lives.
“The flexible hours mean we can watch our kids’ sports matches, go to the gym, and take care of our family dog,” Bob says.
“It’s also nice getting the perks as a Top Dasher, which means we’re prioritised even during quiet times, helping us get work consistently.”
