HAVE YOUR SAY ON A PLACE NAME IN CAMDEN

Looking to confirm two local reserves
THE Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Camden Council to name two reserves in the locality of Currans Hill as Jack Nash Reserve and Sedgwick Reserve.

The proposed names have been in long term use and feature on government authority maps and datasets, as well as being signposted, however other maps may feature incorrect labels for the reserves.

Formalising the names would ensure all maps have the correct labels and that the names are used consistently on maps and in databases.

Jack Nash Reserve is located at 20A Currans Hill Drive, Currans Hill, Camden Local Government Area (LGA).

The proposed name is to commemorate Jack Nash who bred Ayrshire Cattle and ran a dairy farm named “Birriwa” between 1930-1970 situated on Camden Road.

Sedgwick Reserve is located at 1 Currans Hill Drive, Currans Hill, Camden LGA.

The proposed name commemorates Ted Sedgwick who was born at Smeaton in 1896. The “Smeaton” property first grew wheat, and later moved into sheep production. Ted was a soldier, a farmer, talented sportsperson, and former Campbelltown Mayor.

GNB is seeking feedback to gauge community sentiment for the proposed names. Suggestions for alternative names is not being sought at this time.

Details of the proposal can be viewed, and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board’s website.

Alternatively, written submissions may be mailed to the Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795.

The closing date for submissions is 8 September 2024.

Member for Camden, Sally Quinnell said: “It’s important that we recognise parts of our community history as we expand and update the Camden area. It’s important that these names accurately reflect our local identity and heritage. I encourage everyone to use this opportunity to have their say so that we can continue to build an area we can all feel proud of.”
